What is a Dog Sweater?
While worthy of a photoshoot, a dog sweater is a functional and fashionable piece of canine clothing. It provides much needed warmth for short-hair and small breeds. Dogs with thick coats usually don't require a sweater, but it can't hurt and does look good. Older dogs can also benefit from a sweater since they can be vulnerable to the cold. Here are some things to keep in mind before buying one.
Material
Dog sweaters come in a variety of materials but some are more comfortable than others. These are the most common ones to be aware of.
Wool: This material is very warm and provides great insulation. However, it may require hand washing or be itchy on some dogs, so if your dog seems irritated remove the clothing.
Acrylic: This synthetic material still provides plenty of warmth, but it may not be as long-lasting as wool materials. On the plus side, sweaters made of acrylic are often machine washable and easy to care for.
Fleece: While not looking like a sweater in a traditional knit sense, fleece is made of a polyester blend that's warm and cozy.
Size
Take just as much care measuring for dog clothing as you would for your own clothes. Since brands have different sizing, you're going to want to measure around your dog's neck, the deepest part of their chest, and their length. You’ll also want to make sure that the leg openings aren’t restrictive and allow for freedom of movement.
Ease of Use
Look for a sweater or dog jacket that’s easy to get on and off. Walks shouldn’t have to begin with a struggle to get your dog dressed. Some sweaters have Velcro, buttons, or other means of closure, but make sure there’s nothing they can chew off the sweater.
Small dogs — those that weigh less than 22 pounds and are shorter than 16 inches — and toy breeds will particularly benefit from a sweater in colder climates. Dogs with short hair will also be much more comfortable in a sweater, including some large dogs like Greyhounds. Dogs with thicker coats tend not to need a sweater, but ask your veterinarian if you're unsure.
It should fit comfortably around your dog's neck and not feel constricting. It should also be longer on your dog's back and a bit shorter on the chest area so they can urinate without peeing on the sweater.
Before you buy any apparel for your dog, you should take measurements. You'll need to measure your dog's chest, neck, and the length of the back. Once you have your dog's measurements, follow the sizing guides to see which one is the best fit.
