What To Know About Dog Pool Floats
Dog pool floats function very similarly to the ones humans use, but they’re built better for the dog’s size, weight, and nails. Here are some things to consider before purchasing one for your pet.
Uses
The best way for your dog to use a pool float is to give them a break when swimming. It gives dogs a chance to stop treading water and spend more time hanging with the people they love. They can be in pools, lakes, ponds, and other quiet bodies of water without a lot of waves which could cause the pool float to drift, or flip.
Types
There are a variety of pool floats. Some are dry top where dogs are completely out of the water when on them. Other pool floats are semi-submerged or have holes in them that allow water to flow through. Small dogs can also use solid bottomed floats that are designed for small children.
Size
When selecting pool floats consider your dog’s size and weight. Be sure to check the weight limit on any float you are considering to make sure the float will be able to safely hold your dog. If your dog is between sizes, select the larger float because it will be more comfortable for your dog.
Safety
Before getting your dog a pool float, make sure they are comfortable in and near the water. Dogs should always be supervised when using a pool float. Don’t tether your dog to a pool float, which float could seriously injure your dog if it flipped over or your dog attempts to jump off it.
Some confident dogs take to riding pool floats right away, while some timid dogs might take a little longer to enjoy pool floats. With intentional introductions to pool floats, most dogs can learn to enjoy relaxing on one and having a new way to spend time with their families.
Start by introducing your dog to the pool float on the ground and outside the water. Use treats to encourage and reward your dog for sniffing at and investigating the pool float. Then, treat and praise your dog for putting their paws onto the pool float. When your dog is confident with the pool float on the ground, you can move the float into the water and then similarly praise and reward your dog.
If you select an appropriately sized pool float dogs of any size can enjoy relaxing on or playing on a pool float. Just make sure any pool float you select can support your dog’s weight and size.
