What You Should Know About Dog Pools
A dog pool is a pool specifically designed for dogs, so it's more durable than a plastic kiddie pool. Non-dog pools do not work as well for dogs because they don't hold up well to biting or scratching. Dog pools can also handle more weight than a kiddie pool can. Some pet owners use dog pools as an easy way to bathe large dogs, as well.
Materials
It's important that dog pools are made from materials that are durable and waterproof, materials will stand up to lots of playing. You'll often see materials like PVC or nylon used for just that reason. However, dogs should not be allowed to chew on these materials, which can be harmful if consumed. Dog pools should ideally have non-slip or anti-skid surfaces on the bottom of the interior. That prevents your dog from slipping and sliding (and possibly getting hurt).
Portability
Some dog pools are inflatable, while others are foldable. Depending on your circumstances, you may find one type of pool to be more to your dog's liking (and yours) than another. Foldable dog pools are easy to wipe down and store when the fun is done.
Safety
Make sure to monitor your dog at all times while they are in a dog pool (and to choose a pool that is the right size for your pet's safety). Make sure to trim their nails before they go into the pool (to prevent nails snagging on material or puncturing the plastic), and don't let your dog chew or bite the material the pool is made out of.
You should definitely get your dog a pool if your pet loves the water and would appreciate a way to cool off in warmer temperatures. You can also get a dog pool if you have large dogs and want to also use the pool to bathe them outside.
Some dogs will hop in the pool on their own. Obviously, if your dog is small and can't hop in, then you'll likely need to assist. Most medium to large dogs should be able to get in on their own.
It depends on the size of the pool and how much room your dog will need to swim versus sitting and cooling off. Most dog pools are not large enough to allow for full swimming.
Most dogs should be able to rest in a dog pool without swimming. For smaller dogs, this may mean filling the dog pool up only halfway or purchasing a smaller pool. Some breeds, such as Bulldogs and Dachshunds, may struggle in the water. Dogs should be monitored at all times while using a dog pool.
