What to Know About Dog Food Without Peas
The increase in grain-free dog foods means many brands are relying on alternative ingredients, including peas, legumes, and potatoes. It can be difficult to find dog food that doesn’t contain peas!
Researchers from Tufts University published a study in August 2021 indicating that peas may be a leading dog food ingredient contributing to a rise in diet-associated canine heart disease (DCM) in dogs.
As a pet owner, you should familiarize yourself with the ingredients in your dog’s food. If you are feeding a grain-free food with peas listed in the top 10 ingredients, you should contact your veterinarian to see if you need to make a change to consider a pea-free dog food option.
Here’s a tip: make certain the label on your dog’s food indicates that it meets the requirements of the American Association of Feed Control Officers (AAFCO) and is a “Complete and Balanced” diet. This means your dog’s food contains all the necessary nutrients in the correct ratios.
